The worship of a Shivling under a tree is a deeply reverent, traditional, and symbolic practice in Hinduism, often representing Lord Shiva in his form as an ascetic, the Lord of Nature, or as the "Dakshinamurthy" (the teacher). A Shivling placed beneath a tree—particularly the Bilva (Bel) or Banyan tree—symbolizes the union of Purusha (consciousness/Shiva) and Prakriti (nature/Shakti), creating a serene and powerful site for meditation and spiritual energy.

The Shivling-Tree Relationship: The tree acts as a natural shelter, representing the protective and nourishing aspect of the divine. When placed under a tree, it symbolizes that Shiva is present everywhere in nature, often described as the "Lord of the Woods".

The Bilva Tree (Aegle Marmelos): This is the most auspicious tree associated with Shiva. The Bilva tree is said to be the manifest form of Shiva himself. It is believed that all major tirthas (sacred places) reside at the base of the Bilva tree.

Shiva-Shakti Synergy: The merging of a tree with a Shivling (sometimes with roots growing around the stone) demonstrates that Shakti (the natural form) and Shiva (the formless consciousness) are one, requiring each other.

Symbol of Wisdom (Dakshinamurthy): Shiva as Dakshinamurthy is depicted sitting in silence under a Banyan tree, facing South, to teach yoga, music, and wisdom to sages.
